Unfortunately there are those who think taking on a puppy is so cute and fun; but fail to look further into how big the dog gets, is it good with children, are any members of the family allergic to shedding dogs, do they have the space or the time to take it for walks and train it properly, or can they afford the veterinary bills. All of a sudden the fun turns into a disaster and the puppy turns into an abandoned sad dog.
A puppy without training is like a child without guidance. When the puppy play bites on your hand and you do not correct the behaviour immediately, it will grow with a bad habit of biting everyone without knowing the difference between right and wrong. A dog with bad habits are rejected by many people, and needs to have a patient dedicated owner to retrain the dog back to a more acceptable way of behavior. |

Puppies go through a period of teething the first year; so they might try to use your furniture as teethers; this will result in damaged and ripped up furniture. Provide chewing knuckle bones to keep them busy. Also you might want to consider that they will chew and swallow anything they will find, from children’s crayons, stuffed toys, shoes, socks, to leather bags, sofas, belts and so on. But after a year or so the chewing will slow down, and the puppy stage comes to an end. Now you are dealing with a more or less fully grown dog.
It is a lot of fun if you do your research and prepare yourself ahead of time for what to expect. But if you don’t, it’s not fair to blame the dog for being a dog! When adopting pets and bring them to your house, it is not a temporary arrangement. You are committed to look after these beautiful loving souls for the rest of their lives. They depend on you like a child onto its own parent; have a heart and love them half as much as they love you.
